SUMMARY:A Proud Heritage- Finding your African American Roots
DESCRIPTION:Registration link: A Proud Heritage- an African American Family History Event \n \nFor many African Americans\, finding your ancestors can be especially challenging. To celebrate Black History Month\, the Tacoma Family History Center is hosting a free genealogy workshop designed specifically for individuals with African American ancestry. It will be held February 5\, 2022 from 9AM to 2PM. The event is FREE\, and will be held at 1102 S. Pearl St. This workshop will offer step-by-step advice to African-Americans on how to find your roots and trace your family tree. It will also feature tips on how to tell your own personal family story for your descendants. \nThanks to the partnership between FamilySearch International\, The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture\, and The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society the historical records of millions of men\, women and children of African decent have been digitalized are now free and searchable online. The workshop will focus on how to find\, and access these records. \nBeverly Grant\, retired Pierce County Judge\, will open the workshop with personal insights on what is means to have “A Proud Heritage”. \nThe event will also feature guest speaker Thom Reed\, Director of African Heritage Initiatives of North America and Deputy Chief Genealogical Officer for FamilySearch International. He will share his insights on African American records\, research\, and experiences and how connecting with our ancestors “completes us”. \nBreakout sessions include classes on “Freedman Bureau and Bank Records\,” “DNA Testing & Genealogy\,” “Identifying and Preserving Photos & Recording Stories\,” “Journaling\,” “Creating a Family tree & Pedigree\,” “Interviewing & Recording Relatives\,” “Searching through Pierce County Historical Records\,”” RootsTech: What is it and how to navigate this Free event?” Tours of the Tacoma Family History Center will also be featured. \nAlex Haley\, author of Roots said\, “In all of us there is a hunger\, marrow-deep to know our heritage. Join us in discovering your roots\, and begin recapturing your own family tree.
