SUMMARY:TAM Talks | On Native Land
DESCRIPTION:On Native Land: An Overview on Indigenous Sovereignty and Relationship to Place\nWho owns the land on which the Tacoma Art Museum and the library were built? Here in Tacoma\, the land has been under the stewardship of the Puyallup Tribe since time immemorial. The issue of who claims ownership of the land and Native American sovereignty are subjects the Tacoma Art Museum begins to grapple with in the new exhibition On Native Land: Landscapes from the Haub Family Collection. \nIn this inaugural TAM Talk\, Museum Educator and artist Vanessa Harriss will begin to unravel the topic of Native sovereignty and how Native tribes use their independence to care for their communities. This lecture will provide a further understanding of TAM’s current exhibition\, On Native Land\, and the question of who has a right to the land. \nRegister for this TAM Talks event. \nAll programming takes place at the South Tacoma Branch\, 3411 S 56th Street\, Tacoma\, WA 98409. Get more information and directions here. \nFor questions\, please contact Kyley Butler\, Public Programs Coordinator.

SUMMARY:Ignite: In-Between
DESCRIPTION:At DCFF\, we aim to engage our community and ignite conversations that extend beyond the world of film. This year\, in partnership with SHARE\, Pongo Poetry Project\, and Underground Writing\, DCFF is honored to host a screening of the short film IN BETWEEN along with a conversation by community members involved in programs that support King and Pierce counties’ incarcerated and other underserved communities. \nWritten by a student in the Screenwriting Program at the Washington Corrections Center for Women\, IN BETWEEN (directed by Lindy Boustedt) is based on a true story. Through the lens of a what-if. \nIt’s the late-1980s and Lisa\, a biracial teenager having just moved to Seattle from London\, is forced into a new world when she is segregated to a different school from her white sister. But when she meets a welcoming student at orientation\, everything changes. \nClick here to get tickets!
