On Native Land: An Overview on Indigenous Sovereignty and Relationship to Place
Who owns the land on which the Tacoma Art Museum and the library were built? Here in Tacoma, the land has been under the stewardship of the Puyallup Tribe since time immemorial. The issue of who claims ownership of the land and Native American sovereignty are subjects the Tacoma Art Museum begins to grapple with in the new exhibition On Native Land: Landscapes from the Haub Family Collection.
In this inaugural TAM Talk, Museum Educator and artist Vanessa Harriss will begin to unravel the topic of Native sovereignty and how Native tribes use their independence to care for their communities. This lecture will provide a further understanding of TAM’s current exhibition, On Native Land, and the question of who has a right to the land.
